McPherson County Courthouse [MP03-001] Listed 1990/07/05
McPherson County was established in 1890. Tryon, which was known as McPherson until 1892, was named the county seat. Growth was slow in the county partially because it lacked railroad connections. In 1895 there were only two buildings in the county seat, the sod courthouse and the home of the county treasurer. In the 1910s Tryon experienced a boom of sorts and commercial, religious, and educational buildings were constructed. In 1920 county resources were such that voters approved a county wide tax levy for a new courthouse. Construction began in 1925 and was completed the following year.
