Since the founding of the Nebraska State Historical Society in 1878, the Society library has played a major role in its operation. Today the library consists of approximately 80,000 volumes including state publications and periodicals, 3,000 maps and atlases, and 3,532 cataloged Nebraska newspapers.
To support the Library/Archives Division mission the library has the following collecting policy for the types of materials we will collect: General Nebraska and Great Plains history; local Nebraska history including histories of communities, organizations, and institutions; biographies of persons who influenced the development of Nebraska and the Great Plains; Nebraska authors; genealogical material pertaining to Nebraska families and their ethnic backgrounds; Nebraska state government publications; Nebraska and regional maps of the Great Plains; and special publications covering such topics as Great Plains archeology, railroad history, and general historical material from other states. Donations of funds or titles are encouraged because state funds are limited for the purchase of this material.
Original library volumes and maps are not available for interlibrary loan. For details on how to request searches for specific information by mail see A Guide to Genealogical Research at the Nebraska State Historical Society or call 402-471-4751. Nebraska newspapers or other printed materials that we have microfilmed are available for interlibrary loan.
