H.P. Lau and Company was begun in 1870. Its founder, H.P. Lau, was born in 1845 in Fleusburg, Germany. He emigrated to Nebraska around 1870, engaging in the fruit and commission business. When he died in 1897, he was the senior member of H.P. Lau and Company, as well as the President of the Lincoln Drug Company. After H.P. Lau's death, his three sons continued to operate the firm. In 1953, H.P. Lau and Company consolidated with the Archie Furr Co. The consolidated firm continued to distribute Blackbird Food Products and other nationally-known brands. In 1963, Nash-Finch of Minneapolis took over H.P. Lau and Company.

This collection consists of one ledger dating from 1904. This volume contains the financial records of the grocer wholesaling business H.P. Lau and Company. Information about sales to each buyer, listed by month, includes date of sale, terms, check number, debit, credit, and balance. A table of contents, by city, is also provided. Some advertising (ca. 1934) probably sent by merchandisers who wanted H.P. Lau and Company to carry their stock, is taped onto the inside of the back cover of the ledger, as well as on the last few pages of the volume.
