BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Joseph Flick was born in Northampton County, Pennsylvania in 1818. He was married to Savenah Zink, also a native of Northampton County, in 1838. The Flicks moved to Dane County, Wisconsin, in 1844, where they farmed for many years. The family relocated to Clay County, Nebraska, in 1871 where Joseph Flick engaged in farming until his retirement. He died in Hastings, Nebraska, his retirement home, on March 29, 1899.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of one letter dated December 20, 1871. This letter, written by Joseph Flick to A. A. Rowley (a resident of his former home, Dane County, Wisconsin), discusses Flick's plans to settle in Clay County, Nebraska. Flick describes the location of his intended homestead and provides information on the rush of settlers to the area. His analysis of the area includes descriptions of available timber, soil conditions, and wild animals.
