BACKGROUND NOTE

Hoxie N. Howe, son of Herbert R. and Mamie F. Howe, was born near Howe, Nebraska, on January 13, 1885. His father was the adopted son of Major Church Howe (See RG0788), for whom the post office, depot, and the town of Howe, Nebraska was named. The Howe family was also instrumental in the growth and development of Auburn, Nemaha County, Nebraska. On May 6, 1908, Hoxie N. Howe was married to Alma R. Kleckner. Howe was founder of the Brownville Historical Society, and, at the time of his death on October 29, 1959, held the position for Director of that society. Obituaries on Howe appeared in the October 29, 1959 (p.1) and the November 3, 1959 (p.7) issues of the Auburn-Press Tribune.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection consists of one volume arranged in one series: 1) Brownville, Fort Kearney, and Pacific Railroad. The volume relates to the history of the Brownville, Fort Kearney, and Pacific Railroad. Included are listings of officers, newspaper articles, historical reports, and Legal material. The volume has been microfilmed for preservation and for access through interlibrary loan.
