The Knights of Pythias organization was founded on February 19, 1864, in Washington, D.C. as a social and fraternal group. Named to honor the ancient friendship of the two Roman figures, Damon and Pythias, the Knights sought "to gather into one mighty fraternity, worthy men who appreciate the true meaning of friendship." The organization also offered financial benefits to its members in the event of sickness or disability, and death benefits to the families of deceased members.
The Grand Lodge of Nebraska was organized in 1869. Lodge 16 in Lincoln, Nebraska was founded on December 2, 1873.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of one volume of meeting minutes dating from March 27, 1887 to May 20, 1896. The collection relates to the activities and business conducted by the Knights of Pythias, Lodge 16 of Lincoln, Nebraska. The minutes provide information on plans made and actions taken by this particular lodge of the Knights of Pythias. Included are committee reports, membership information, reports on finances and dues, and recordings of discussions on fraternal affairs.
