BACKGROUND NOTE

The Philomathian Literary Society of Seward, Nebraska met on January 18, 1898 to organize as a permanent society. Officers were elected at this meeting to serve a six-week term. During its weekly meetings, members of the Philomathian Literary Society performed recitations and debated questions relating to the arts, education, and the social and political scene. The Society adjourned indefinitely on April 4, 1898.

The collection consists of the minutes of the weekly meetings of the Philomathian Literary Society of Seward, Nebraska. The minutes date from January 18 - April 4, 1898 and provide information on membership participation in the Society and issues debated by the members.
