Nebraska Territory Map, about 1854

Nebraska Territory Map, about 1854

With the passage of the Kansas/Nebraska Act in 1854, Nebraska Territory was organized and opened for white settlement. As this map shows, the original Nebraska Territory included all of present-day Nebraska, and portions of South Dakota, North Dakota, Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana. In 1861 new territories began to be carved away from Nebraska Territory.
