Fast Facts about Sand Hill Cranes:

  • The proper name is Greater Sand Hill Crane.
  • The average size of adult Cranes is 4 foot to 5 foot tall.
  • The wing span of a crane can range from 6 to 7 feet.
  • Young Cranes are brown and lack the red forehead.
  • Adult Cranes are grey and always have red foreheads.
  • Over 500,000 Cranes migrate through Nebraska during March and early April and converge on, and near the Platte River.
