SUBJECT: Archeological excavation tours in Nemaha county June 3, 1:00-5:00 p.m.
Nebraska State Historical Society archeologists are excavating a Central Plains tradition Native American Site in Nemaha County north of Peru during May and June. An Open House for the public at the site will be held Sunday, June 3 from 1-5pm with a rain date of June 10.
The archeologists hope to identify features such as houses, fire pits, and storage pits in order to determine the functions carried out at the site. The excavations are being done under an interagency agreement with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and are part of the clearance process for a flood retention dam. The NRCS and the Nemaha NRD (Natural Resources District) are working together on the construction of flood retention dams.
Conditions are rugged at the site. Participants in the open house should be prepared to deal with sun, heat, rough ground, bugs, and a potential to be exposed to poison oak or poison ivy. Long pants and sturdy shoes are recommended. A tractor and wagon will provide transportation from road-side parking to the site. The archeologists will be on hand to give tours of the site, show artifacts found, and answer questions. This is a rare opportunity to see an archeological site excavation in progress.
Archeological materials collected at the site will go to the Nebraska State Historical Society in Lincoln for analysis and long-term storage. A technical report will be produced for the NRCS. A booklet produced for the public will be available in late 2008.
